Cuestionada o refutada la primera concesión de San Mateo y el Angel, Caravaggio empezó a completar el tríptico con las dos escenas de la vocación y el martirio del santo evangelista. Al cabo de tres siglos y medio no se encuentra un acuerdo para la datación de estas obras. La polémica se reaviva en 1951 con la ocasión de la muestra en Milán. El problema es de importancia fundamental porque es determinante en la cronología de las obras del íntegro del período romano, sea para determinar la fecha del arribo de Caravaggio a Roma así como la duración de su primera estadía.

Questioned or refuted the first concession of Saint Matthew and the Angel, Caravaggio began to complete the triptych with the two scenes of the vocation and martyrdom of the holy evangelist. After three and a half centuries, no agreement has been found for the dating of these works. The controversy was rekindled in 1951 with the occasion of the exhibition in Milan. The problem is of fundamental importance because it is decisive in the chronology of the works of the entire Roman period, be it to determine the date of Caravaggio’s arrival in Rome as well as the duration of his first stay.
