La nueva biblioteca está ubicada en un amplio solar en el centro de la ciudad limitado en el lado norte por la avenida Emili Grahit de intenso tráfico y rodeado por bloques residenciales en altura de una gran variedad de lenguajes y materiales.
Estas condiciones urbanas, y el hecho de ser la biblioteca más grande de la red de bibliotecas públicas de Catalunya, contribuyeron al desarrollo de una estrategia de diseño basada en dos consideraciones principales:
Por un lado, una geometría abstracta, un volumen puro y rotundo, un cuadrado perfecto, que determina sin lugar a dudas su carácter de edificio público y cívico, diferenciándolo del tejido residencial que lo envuelve.

The new library is located on a large rectangular plot in the center of Girona. Bounded on the north by busy Avenue Emili Grahit, the site is embedded in a dense and compact neighborhood of tall residential blocks. These urban conditions – plus the fact that this is the largest library in the network of public libraries in Catalunya – contributed to the development of a design strategy based on two main considerations.
First of all, given its civic and cultural importance the decision was made to differentiate the library from the surrounding residential fabric both in terms of its form and the materials.
